MANILA, Philippines- The Foton Tornadoes bounced back from a disastrous first set to upset the Petron Blazing Spikers, 14-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22, and take the lead in their best-of-3 finals showdown, Thursday night, November 26, at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The defending champions started strong and gritty as they easily demolished Foton in the first set duel before the Tornadoes recovered and took over in the next 3 sets.
“You have to expect them to put up a fight. That’s why in the fourth set, we had to hold on to our game plan because if not, they will take over,” said Foton Head Coach Vilet Ponce-De Leon.
Foton banked on the heroics of American import Lindsay Stalzer who finished with 25 points while Kathleen Messing and Dindin Santiago-Manabat added 17 and 10 markers apiece.
In a previous interview, Stalzer mentioned she was looking forward to face defending champions Petron in the finals.
“For some reason all along, I’ve been expecting for Petron. They’re the only team we haven’t beaten yet and it’d be nice to have a chance at them,” Stalzer said.
Foton showed enough focus and determination to beat Petron for the first time this season and even threaten to wrap up the series in their second matchup duel on Monday, November 30.
Rupia Inck led Petron with 21 points while Frances Molina and Rachel Ann Daquis combined for 19 markers. – Rappler.com
