MANILA, Philippines — In what was expected to be a walk in the park, Meralco had to endure a huge scare from Far Eastern University.

Fortunately for the Power Spikers, their veterans stepped up when it mattered most to edge the Lady Tamaraws, 25-12, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 15-13 in the 10th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference on Tuesday, August 27 at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

Chinese import Coco Wang came away with 23 points on 18 attacks while veteran Maureen Penetrante provided ample help, finishing with 14 points as Meralco hiked its record to 2-1.

Near blackout for Meralco

Medyo hesitant pa ang mga bata, yung kalaban kasi ay matiyaga,” said Power Spikers’ head coach Oliver Almadro. “Hats off ako sa FEU.”

Siguro nagdala na rin sa amin yung tapang nila Maureen (And other veterans)”, added Almadro.

After dropping the first two sets, the Lady Tamaraws came out with guns ablaze in the 3rd frame behind the efforts of Rem Palma and incoming rookie Bernadeth Pons, who punished Meralco’s defense as they detonated a 9-2 binge to grab the lead, 17-9, before dousing water in every rally by the Power Spikers.

Pons, a native of Negros Occidental, ended the set with a kill, 25-18.

Both teams engaged in a tight battle in the 4th set before FEU turned to the deadly duo of Palma and Pons in a run capped by a Palma point that sent the match into a 5th and final frame.

The 6’3” Wang, along with Mercado and Penetrante then took over in the last set as they carried Meralco to victory.

Wang denied Pons to shove the Power Spikers into matchpoint, 14-13 and then put the proverbial icing on the cake with a kill, 15-13.

Medyo nagkakapaan pa rin kami,” quipped Almadro.

Palma and Pons paced the Lady Tamaraws, coming through with 20 points apiece but it was not enough to lift their team to the win. – Rappler.com
