Orcollo comes from behind to win men’s 9-ball SEA Games gold
Surigao del Sur native Dennis Orcollo overcomes a 1-3 hole to defeat his Myanmar opponent to earn the Philippines another billiards gold medal

SINGAPORE –  Down 1-3 to Myanmar’s Maung Maung after the first four racks, Dennis Orcollo’s face remained expression-less, hence the moniker “Robocop.”

But when Maung scratched on the 9-ballon the fifth frame, Orcollo’s demeanor was just as ruthlessly cold in pouncing on the opening against his Burmese rival.

He easily closed out the rack to trim the gap to 2-3 and won the remaining ones on the way to a lopsided 9-4 triumph in retaining his men’s 9-ball title in the 28th Southeast Asian Games billiards tournament the OCBC Arena here on Wednesday, June 10.

“Medyo sinuwerte, kasi magaling yong kalaban,”  Orcollo, said. “Medyo masama lang kamada noon umpisa.”

(“We just got lucky, because my opponent was also good,” Orcollo said. “I was just sluggish at the start.”)

It was the fourth SEA Games gold medal that the 36-year-old Bislig, Surigao del Sur native captured going back to the 2011 Indonesia SEA Games.

Orcollo’s conquest marked a sweep of all the golds at stake in the billiards event, including the men’s 9-ball title won by Warren Kiamco and Carlos Biado and the Chezka Centeno’s women’s 9-ball singles championship

The Filipino bets also garnered one silver from Rubilen Amit, a losing finalist to Centeno, and five bronzes in snooker at the windup of the five-day competition. – Rappler.com
