David Lozada files this video blog on the opening ceremonies.

The unity flame has been lit and the 6th ASEAN Schools Games is officially open. Some 1,500 athletes from 7 Southeast Asian countries attended the opening ceremonies here in the Marikina Sports Center. This is the biggest international event the city has handled and the first time for the Philippines to host the games.

It was a night of cultural appreciation and regional unity. The opening ceremonies highlighted the diverse culture of Southeast Asia. The event kicked off with a parade of flags and the national anthems of each to the 10 member states. Students from public schools across Metro Manila performed the traditional dances of the participating countries before the respective athletes entered the stadium.

Education Secretary Bro Armin Luistro encouraged the athletes to participate in fair play and to learn from each other’s cultures.

The 6th ASEAN Schools Games come a year before the ASEAN Economic integration in 2015, where increased trade and interaction between the 10 countries in the region are expected.

The games will run from December 1 to 5. We will be giving you updates as we cover the different sports events throughout the week. David Lozada, Rappler. Marikina.
