The games not only foster sportsmanship, but more importantly, build awareness and friendships across the region, says DepEd secretary Armin Luistro

MARIKINA CITY, Philippines – Attended by at least 1,500 athletes from 7 Southeast Asian countries, the opening ceremonies of the 6th ASEAN Schools Games were held Sunday, December 30, in the Marikina Sports Stadium.

According to Bro Armin Lusitro, Department of Education secretary, the games should not only foster sportsmanship, but more importantly, build awareness and friendships across the region.

“We dare learn from each other. We learn that differences allow us to enjoy and appreciate the various treasures that we see and enjoy among the different ASEAN countries,” Luistro said.

The games will feature 11 sports events – basketball, volleyball, track and field, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, table tennis, sepak takraw, badminton, wushu, and golf – that will run until Friday, December 5.
