Calabarzon twins aim for gold in badminton
Twins John Henrick and John Henry Peralta are inseparable, even in badminton. The first-timers in Palaro want Calabarzon to dominate the entire badminton competition

TAGUM CITY, Philippines – Identical twins John Henrick and John Henry Peralta do everything together, so it is not surprising that they are manning the badminton doubles team of Calabarzon’s secondary boys for the 2015 Palarong Pambansa.

Interestingly, Erick (John Henrick) and Henry (John Henry) do not play singles badminton.

“It simply strengthens our brotherhood. And it teaches us both to play in a very intense level kasi most of the tournament is single elimination so walang ‘bawi bukas’ or ‘pangit ng laro ko ngayong araw eh,’ kasi every game is a do or die game,” said Henry.

(It simply strengthens our brotherhood. And it teaches us both to play in a very intense level because most of the tournament is single elimination so you can’t say you’ll do better tomorrow or you can’t complain that your play today is not good, because every game is a do or die game.)

In fact, if they can help it, they only want to stay partners in every badminton game.

Hindi na kami pinaghiwalay dito (They no longer separated us here),” Henry said.

Erick added: “Hindi ganoong kaganda yung results ‘pag naglaro kami ng magkahiwalay (The results are not that good if we play separately).”

That is how attuned they are to each other – they already find it hard to play with other partners.

Both a first-timer in Palaro, the 16-year-olds are aiming for the gold medal in the badminton doubles. They also hope Calabarzon can dominate the entire badminton competition.

Although the duo lost their doubles match during the Team Tie on Tuesday, May 5, their teammates won their singles matches. This allowed Team Calabarzon to rule the Badminton Team Tie secondary boys.

‘Inseparable’

The ongoing Palarong Pambansa is the largest grassroots sporting event in the Philippines that aims to develop the potentials of the youth to become responsible and globally-competitive citizens.

Erick and Henry made it to this prestigious multisporting event after they won gold during their regionals in 2014. They first played in the regional meet in 2013 but only managed a silver and failed to make the cut for the Calabarzon team.

The twins are from the La Salle College Antipolo’s badminton team, headed by coach Ronald Magnaye who is also coaching them here.

The two also train under Team JB in Taytay, Rizal, and coached by twins Willy and Winny Albo.

The Peraltas started playing badminton at the age of 9 years old, when their grandfather brought them along with him whenever he plays. Henry admitted they were both fat then and needed the exercise.

Henry and Erick are not the only ones who play badminton in the family. Their parents also play, while their younger brothers even won an inter-barangay badminton competition in 2014.

Off the court, Henry and Erick are still inseparable. At home, they share one bedroom and sleep on a double-deck bed. In school, they both like math.

Henry said he and his brother would most likely continue doing everything together. – Rappler.com
