Malaysians formally welcome athletes, officials, and other delegates for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games here in Kuala Lumpur with an extravagant opening ceremony.

The ceremony takes place here in the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, which has a capacity of over 87,000 people. Bukit Jalil is the venue for sports such as swimming, athletics,and hockey.

From marching bands to fireworks and an elaborate light show, Malaysia showcases well its culture, traditions, and modern tastes.  

Team Philippines marches into the stadium with taekwondo Olympian Kirstie Alora carrying the country’s flag.

The Philippines already claimed its first gold medal earlier in the day courtesy of marathoner Mary Joy Tabal.

The country is aiming to improve from its 29-gold medal haul and 6th place finish two years ago in Singapore.
