CESAFI: UC Junior Webmasters avenge finals loss to Magis Eagles
The UC Junior Webmasters remain unbeaten with a victory over Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters avenged last year’s loss in the juniors championship finals to the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles with a 62-55 outsmarting of the defending champion in their first meeting in the 16th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (CESAFI) Tuesday night, August 16 at the New Cebu Coliseum.

It was also the UC Junior Webmasters who ended the winning streak of the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles last season when they won Game 1 in their best-of-3 series.

What makes the win sweeter for the Junior Webmasters is that not only did they stop the Magis Eagles in the elimination round, a feat unheard of last year, but they were also able to take the solo lead after going 3-0 so far in the single round robin elimination.

Luigi Gabisan was simply unstoppable as he finished with a total of 22 points, 15 of which he scored from beyond the arc. Also contributing in the Junior Webmasters charge were Gelmart Umpad, who had 14 points, and Johnbryl Cuyos with 11 points.

The game featured 8 deadlocks including a 50-all at the end of the third quarter which seemed to set-up an exciting final canto. However, the Junior Webmasters worked harder as a team and were able to put up their biggest lead in the ballgame at 8 points, 61-53, as the seconds ticked down to the final buzzer.

The Magis Eagles had drawn first blood after opening the ballgame with a 6-0 run, however, the Junior Webmasters quickly recovered and took a slim 1-point lead, 17-16, going into the second quarter.

Andre Velasco was able to wrestle the lead for the Magis Eagles at 22-21 at the 5:30 mark, however, the Junior Webmasters answered with a 7-0 run sparked by Cuyos’ trey.

Eroll Pastor was able to put a stop to the Junior Webmasters charge but it wasn’t enough to stop last year’s first runner-up from posting a 4-point advantage, 32-28, at the end of the first half.

Known for their resiliency, the Magis Eagles came back in the third quarter led by Jed Colonia to level the game at 50-all going into the fourth quarter.

But with victory close at hand, the Junior Webmasters did not let up. As the Magis Eagles came close at 53-all, Gabisan and Cuyos once again waxed hot for UC, this time with the help of Jumike Casera.

In the collegiate match, the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars narrowly escaped an upset as they survived a blistering onslaught by the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CITU) Wildcats, 80-76.

The Jaguars did not look coordinated in the first half after committing 7 turnovers in the first quarter alone and the Wildcats pounced on this led by Wilkin Lemuel Sanchez, a former Jaguar himself.

The Jaguars recovered in the second half and took the lead early in the third quarter courtesy of Juan Miguel Gastador’s 4 straight points after sinking all of his charities.

Mantilla and Gastador continued to combine in the third canto to give the Jaguars a 3-point upperhand at the end.

Although the Wildcats were still able to tie the game twice in the final canto they eventually succumbed to the Jaguars.

Mantilla was rightfully named as the player of the ballgame with his 24 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Jaguars were Ralph Jude Dinolan with 16 points and Gastador with 14 points.
