San Beda, DLSU book FilOil semis tickets after close wins
The San Beda Red Lions and De La Salle University Green Archers are advancing to the next round of the FilOil Flying V Premier Cup preseason tournament after pulling out close wins

MANILA, Philippines – The San Beda Red Lions and De La Salle University Green Archers are advancing to the next round of the FilOil Flying V Premier Cup preseason tournament after pulling out close wins against the Letran Knights and UPHSD Altas on Wednesday, June 10, at the San Juan Arena.

San Beda, who won 75-72 and will face Jose Rizal University in the semis, was led by Pierre Tankoua who put up 12 points and 9 rebounds, while Javee Mocon pitched in by registering 10 points and 9 boards.

The Knights, who entered the game with a 6-2 record in the tourney, were spearheaded by Mark Cruz’s 20 markers and 3 dimes. Jomari Sollano and Bong Quinito each played well, putting up 14 points apiece.

Letran spent most of the game trailing, but had a final crack towards the end of the game thanks to some timely pressure defense that forced San Beda turnovers and led to some easy points.

A floater by Quinito cut the Red Lions lead to 3, 74-71, but rather than getting a stop after, the Knights were called for a foul that sent Ranbill Tongco to the line, where he split his charities.

Letran was able to cut the lead to 3 thanks to a free throw and gathered another stop on defense with 4 seconds remaining. However, Cruz missed a heave a few steps beyond the 3-point line that sealed the loss for his team.

In the second game, a late layup by Jason Perkins sealed victory for La Salle, 81-79.

Perkins finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Jeron Teng and Thomas Torres each had 18 points in the win.

UPHSD, who entered the game with only one loss, received 25 points from Bright Akhuetie and 23 from Gabriel Dagangon.

The Altas used an 11-2 run – all points from Dagangon and back-up big man Prince Eze – to tie the match at 76 late in the fourth quarter.

After Perkins hit a lay-in to extend his team’s lead back up to two, Gerald Dizon misfired on a triple that could have put his club ahead for the first time in the last quarter.

Teng was then fouled but split his free throws, opening the door for Dagangon to hit a 3-ball that tied the match. After a time-out, La Salle went to Perkins who converted a tough lay-up with 0.6 seconds remaining. On the next play, an inbound by UPHSD sailed out of bounds, sealing the loss.

The Green Archers will take on rival FEU Tamaraws in the semis which takes place on Friday, June 12.
