CESAFI: Magis Eagles send message with Greywolves annihilation
The Magis Eagles blow out Don Bosco while the SWU-Phinma Cobras defeat the UC Webmasters

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The leaders in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (CESAFI) Basketball Tournament suffered contrasting fates as the Southwestern University-Phinma (SWU-Phinma) Cobras clinched solo leadership in the collegiate division and the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves saw their winning streak ended on Saturday, August 27, at the new Cebu Coliseum, downtown this city.

The SWU-Phinma Cobras survived the final quarter challenge mounted by the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 73-61, to extend their streak to 5-0 and grab the top spot in the collegiate division.

The DBTC Greywolves, on the other hand, were no match for the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles as they succumbed to the defending champion, 48-73. Both teams now share the top spot with similar 4-1 win-loss records.

Former MVP Mark Jayven Tallo was named as the Best Player of the ballgame with his 14 points which included a buzzer beater trey to end the first half with a huge 19-point lead for the Cobras, 41-22.

The Cobras waxed hot at the start of the buzzer by immediately going on a 15-0 run before the Webmasters managed to score courtesy of Clint Suelto. The Webmasters continued to trail until the final canto wherein they looked to comeback behind the heroics of Justine Dacalos. However, the closest they could come was 9 points.

SHS-AdC Magis Eagles Annihilate DB Greywolves

The Magis Eagles signified how keen they are of grabbing their 4th title in this inter-school caging tournament as they ended the fairytale 4-0 run of new powerhouse Greywolves.

This highly anticipated match did not live up to expectations after the Greywolves never found themselves in the game and were thoroughly overrun from start to finish, managing only 9 points in the first half against the Magis Eagles’ 27.

Eroll Pastor took charge of the Magis Eagles rout with 12 points while Andrew Velasco chipped in 10 points.

In contrast, DBTC’s top two scorers scored more than Pastor and Velasco with Alje Mendez finishing with 19 markers and Ken Gato with 11 points albeit for a losing cause.

Despite never looking challenged, the Magis Eagles did not let up as they stormed to a commanding 18-point advantage, 27-9, in the first quarter. They never allowed the Greywolves a taste of the lead as they maintained a two digit advantage by as many as 37 points, 71-34, in the final canto.

In other games, the battle between the winless teams was won by the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors behind an endgame rally capped by a trey from Genarld Inigo with the seconds trickling out over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens, 72-64.

The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers, on the other hand, improved their standings to 3-1 after also a lopsided win against the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 80-56.
