CEBU CITY, Philippines – University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters team captain Garciano “Garexx” Puerto Jr. is the new Slam Dunk king of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) after accumulating a total of 73 points in the final round of the contest during the All-Star Sunday, October 2 at the New Cebu Coliseum.
The 24-year-old native of Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur recovered from the automatic 30 points he got in his first attempt in the final round.
With a one-handed slam dunk, he earned another 43 points for a total final score of 73.
Rey Anthony Suerte of the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers finished with 68 points.
Puerto’s first attempt was a sky-high alley-oop wherein he enlisted the assistance of fellow Slam Dunk contestant Juan Miguel Gastador of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars. But he failed to dunk the ball in, giving him the automatic 30 points.
Suerte, for his part, earned 38 points with an alley-oop in his first attempt but had to settle for an automatic 30 points when he failed in his reverse slam for his second attempt.
Puerto and Suerte advanced to the final round of the contest after finishing as top 1 and 2 in the elimination round.
Other contestants who failed to make it to the final round were Gastador, Conrad Catapusan of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and Rodelio Cauba of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) Panthers.
The contest, however, left much to be desired after the mechanics were deemed to have restricted the contestants from showcasing their creative slam dunk stunts. It also foiled what would have been a rematch between Gastador and Suerte when they went up against each other in Leyte.
Contestants were given 2 attempts in the elimination round with a failed dunk getting an automatic 30 points. The top two finishers advanced to the final round wherein they are also given two attempts with the failed dunk still getting 30 points. The player with the highest points gets the title.
3-Point Shootout
The 3-Point Shootout title went to the UV Green Lancers with rookie Tristan Ray Albina, taking over the title held by Francisco Arong last year with his total of 16 points.
Albina advanced to the final round by also topping the elimination with 15 points alongside USP-F Panthers’ Jawein Wisdom Ceniza (13), Puerto (13), and UV Green Lancers’ Josue Segumpan (12).
Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras’ Mark Jayven “Macmac” Tallo, USC Warriors’ Kevin Oleodo and Victor Emmanuel Rabat, as well as UC Webmasters’ Justine Dacalos all got 11 points.
All-Star Games
The East teams continued to lord it over the West as the High School All-Stars East lambasted the West, 92-73. The East College All-Stars, on the other hand, had to work harder to put away the West, 74-69. The Easts also won in both divisions last year.
Tallo was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the College All-Stars with his 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and one steal. Joining him in the Mythical 5 were Catapusan, UC Webmasters’ Gileant Delator, Napao and Segumpan.
The High School All-Stars MVP title went to Alje Mendez of the Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) Greywolves with his double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Named into the Mythical 5 alongside Mendez were John Benedick Damolo (DBTC), Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles’ Jed Cedrick Colonia, Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons’ James Daniel Tempra and UV Baby Lancers’ Raul Jancork Cabahug. – Rappler.com
