CESAFI: SHS-Ateneo downs Don Bosco to win HS football crown
Leo Maquiling scores the winning goal for the Magis Eagles as SHS-Ateneo de Cebu wins its third high school title

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles applied the brakes on the title streak of the Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) Greywolves with a 1-0 edging to clinch the 2016 CESAFI Secondary Football title Sunday, October 16 at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The storied rivalry between these teams had the Magis Eagles winning against the Greywolves for the second time in a span of 5 years. Their first win against DB was in 2012.

This is the third time that the Magis Eagles are hoisting the secondary football title. Their first was at the expense of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) Baby Panthers in 2010. At that time, DB had failed to make it to the finals after they were disqualified from the CESAFI tournament for choosing to play in the Cebu City Olympics.

Just a few minutes after returning to the pitch following a 0-all score halftime, team captain Leo Maquiling scored the winning goal on a ground ball at the 53rd minute by doggedly going up against two DB defenders who sandwiched him in between them that also left goalkeeper Joseph Kei Ceniza scrambling then failing to save the ball.

“Opportunity comes only once so when it came, I took the opportunity to score,” said Maquiling, who is also a consistent national junior team member.

Magis Eagles head coach Hayato Ayabe said that they employed man to man marking because the Greywolves is known for their crosses in losing their opponents.

Sure enough, one of the factors that made a big contribution to SHS-AdC’s win was their tight defense which effectively choked DB’s offense and forced the Greywolves to continuously miss in their attempts to score.

The Greywolves wasted so many scoring attempts with more than 10 just in the first half alone.

Although the Magis Eagles were doing well in manning the defense, their counterattacks could only be counted on the palm of the hand.

As concentrated on their attacks, Maquiling’s goal seemed to have dismantled DB’s composure. They, however, continued to fight to the very last but their goals just won’t go in.

Third place was bagged by the USP-F Baby Panthers who routed the University of San Carlos (USC), 5-1. Leading the rout was Ivan Marcel Ouano who completed a hat-trick in the 33rd, 35th and 38th minutes. Sealing USP-F’s win was Luis Aguilar’s back-to-back goals in the 48th and 50th minutes.

USC’s lone goal was scored by Antonio Alazas in the 74th minute.

Maquiling was aptly named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Other Magis Eagles given special awards were Paolo Montesclaros as Best Defender and Jack Sembrano as Best Goalkeeper.

Other special awardees were USP-F’s Aguilar as the top scorer with a total of 10 goals and DB’s Glen Thomas Ramos as Best Midfielder. – Rappler.com
