CEBU CITY, Philippines – The University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars have taken a share of the lead after thrashing the Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras, 103-88, in the CESAFI men’s basketball tournament Saturday, August 12, at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The win moved the USJR Jaguars to a 2-0 record alongside the University of San Carlos Warriors.

In the high school division, the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles both improved to 2-0 while the Cebu Eastern College Dragons gets back on track as they all defeated their respective foes.

The UV Baby Lancers annihilated the Don Bosco Technology Center Greywolves, 88-69, while the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles lambasted the Cebu Institute of Technology University Wildkittens, 78-55. The CEC Dragons, on the other hand, outsmarted the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers, 87-77.

Jaybie Mantilla scattered 21 points to lead the Jaguars with Ralph Jude Dinolan contributing 20 points and Victor Baldo Nuñez adding 15 points.

Sir Shaquille Imperial and Jobanie Luz both dished 18 points for the Cobras losing cause. Gerald Fernandez added 12 points.

Both teams exchanged leads several times and tied the game 10 times before the Jaguars took the upperhand on Mantilla’s basket halfway in the third quarter and from there never looked  back.

The Jaguars dealt the Cobras their second straight loss in the tournament.

Meanwhile, topscorers in the junior contest were Justin Jake Rosete for the Baby Lancers with 19 points, Jhon Benedict Yu with 12 points for the Magis Eagles and Vhann Joshua Baruc with 19 points for the Dragons.

Leading their teams despite the loss were John Benedick Damolo with 19 points for the Greywolves, Marion Abinuman with 9 points for the Wildkittens and Winston Jay Ynot with 27 points for the Baby Panthers.
