San Beda faces NCAA champ Letran on Season 92 opening day
A rematch of last year's finals is set for opening day of NCAA Season 92

MANILA, Philippines – San Beda College will have the opportunity to avenge its heartbreaking loss to Colegio de San Juan de Letran as both schools are set to meet on opening day of the 92nd season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on June 25.

Last October, Letran won its first basketball crown since 2005 at the expense of San Beda by defeating the Red Lions in the do-or-die Game 3 of the NCAA Season 91 Finals.

The Knights spoiled their longtime rivals’ bid for a record-setting 6th straight basketball championship in the process.

However, it was not a walk in the park for Letran as the Muralla-based brigade had to hold off San Beda in overtime. The red-and-white sparked an 8-0 run within the last two minutes of the 4th quarter to force a 5-minute overtime period.

Letran had San Beda’s numbers in overtime and cruised to an 85-82 win for its 17th overall NCAA basketball championship.

The heated rivalry between the two institutions started on October 28, 1950 when the “Murder Inc” duo of Lauro “The Fox” Mumar and Herminio “Togay” Astorga steered Letran to an NCAA title over the Carlos “Caloy” Loyzaga-led San Beda.

San Beda got a measure of revenge for its disappointing defeat in the NCAA Finals 57 years earlier by sweeping the blue-and-red brigade in a 2007 best-of-3 encounter.

San Beda followed it up with 2012 and 2013 championship wins over Letran before the Knights finally set foot on the promised land against the Red Lions in 2015.

The opening ceremony of NCAA Season 92 is set to take place at the 20,000-seater Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Aside from the San Beda vs Letran showdown, Jose Rizal University (JRU) is booked to take on Mapua Institute of Technology in the curtain-raiser game of the season.

JRU and Mapua made it to the crossover semi-final phase in Season 91 before being booted out by San Beda and Letran respectively.

In the forthcoming NCAA season, a 4-day game week will be followed as Mondays will be allotted for two juniors matches.

Two seniors games will be held every Tuesday, while Thursdays will feature one junior and two seniors contests.

Two juniors and two seniors games will be played during Fridays to cap off the NCAA basketball week. – Rappler.com
