Ateneo avenges loss to La Salle, keeps twice-to-beat hopes alive
The Blue Eagles overcomes early turnovers to keep pace in the race for twice-to-beat advantage

MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Blue Eagles were able to fight through a slow start of turnovers, missed shots, and a double-digit deficit and took down their rival in the DLSU Green Archers, 73-62, on Sunday, November 8, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

It was a big win for Ateneo, as the Blue Eagles avenged their loss to the Green Archers a month ago.

Ateneo now stands at 9-4 this season after winning their fifth straight game. Sunday’s win also kept Ateneo just one game behind UST (10-3) in the loss column and two games behind FEU (10-2) – two teams they’re chasing for one of the two twice-to-beat seeds in the Final Four round.

La Salle, on the other hand, dropped to 5-7 and is now the fifth seed in the league standings behind National University (6-7).

Fifth-year player Von Pessumal led the way for Ateneo in potentially his last ever Ateneo-La Salle game with 17 points and 6 boards, while graduating star Kiefer Ravena had 15 points.

Ateneo’s rookies stepped up as Aaron Black and Adrian Wong had 13 and 10 points, respectively.

La Salle, who was on top by 10 in the first half and led 35-30 at halftime, was led by the 16 points and 9 boards of Prince Rivero. Jeron Teng, who fouled out late in the fourth period, finished with 11 points while Jason Perkins had 8 on 3-of-10 shooting.

“For me, emotionally, parang naging (it became) anti-climatic because of what happened the past few days, but it took a little bit emotionally for us, kasi medyo na-spent kami (because we were spent) emotionally the past few days,” Blue Eagles head coach Bo Perasol said post-game, referring to the Chibueze Ikeh arrest Ateneo dealt with this week.

“Looking at that win column, what’s important right now is we’re giving ourselves to catch the league leaders,” said the head coach, who’s also in his last year in Ateneo.

Ateneo used a 23-9 third period to take control of the game and didn’t relinquish their lead the rest of the way. They shot 41% from the floor and limited DLSU to 37% shooting.

The Blue Eagles also did better at the foul stripe, going 23-of-31, while La Salle went 12-of-24.

“Very special siya kasi ang daming pinagdaanan (because we went through a lot) this past week,” Ravena said about the win.

“We took everything positively, and going into this game we knew La Salle wouldn’t be giving this game,” he said.

The Blue Eagles will end their elimination round campaign against the UE Red Warriors, while DLSU has games remaining against UP and FEU.

“This victory means a lot to us, because of our morale,” said Pessumal, who was a +21 while on the court.

The Blue Eagles had 14 fastbreak points to the Green Archers’ 2, and also dominated them on the glass, 48-34.
