FEU rallies late, eliminates La Salle
FEU comes back from a double-digit deficit to send La Salle crashing out of the UAAP Season 78 Final Four race

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The FEU Tamaraws went on their patented fourth quarter run to bury the DLSU Green Archers and send them to elimination, 71-68, on Wednesday, November 18, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Led by Roger Pogoy and Mon Arong, FEU hit big shots down the stretch to take momentum of the game and held on the rest of the way for the victory.

La Salle was up by 15 in the third period, had a chance to face NU in a playoff for the number 4 seed with a win, but will now instead miss the Final Four for just the fourth time in 22 years.

Arong finished with 13 points while Pogoy registered 11. Both Mac Belo and Mike Tolomia sat the entire fourth period, but still finished with a combined 12 points.

The Tamaraws will open their Final Four campaign against the 9-5 Ateneo Blue Eagles on Saturday, November 21.

“Of course, we also have the intention of keeping guys fresh in the event that we will play on Saturday,” FEU head coach Nash Racela said post-game.

“Ateneo is a tough team. They have improved a lot, game-to-game,” he said.

Jeron Teng led DLSU with 20 points, 9 boards, and 5 dimes. Prince Rivero had another stellar game, compiling 16 points and 9 rebounds.

A 3-ball by Pogoy capped off a 10-0 FEU run to make it a 57-55 game with 4:25 left. After both teams exchanged baskets, Pogoy hit another 3-ball with 3:12 to go to cut the DLSU lead to one, 61-60.

Pogoy then hit another triple from way outside to make it a 63-61 game with 2:34 to go. After La Salle couldn’t answer, Arong hit an off-balanced floater to give his team a 4-point lead.

An and-one play by Teng cut the FEU lead to 67-66 with 1:22 to go. Arong then missed a basket, but Joshua Torralba missed on his corner triple.

After both teams took turns missing, Arong was fouled and extended FEU’s lead to 69-66 with 12 seconds to go. Teng then scored on a layup with 8 seconds left, but DLSU couldn’t foul FEU to stop the clock.

Steve Holmqvist converted a layup with just 0.8 second left, forcing DLSU to a half court heave that missed to seal the loss.
