MANILA, Philippines — If last year’s cheerdance competition is any indication, then Far Eastern University Cheering Squad has reason to believe 2013 might just be the year they have been waiting for.
Coming just 0.9 points short behind winner University of the Philippines, the Morayta crew is coming into the Season 76 UAAP Cheerdance Competition hungrier than ever.
“We’re very hungry. Right on the day itself [last year], after we have heard the result, ‘oh my God, it’s only 0.9!’” FEU coach Jacqueline Alolor-Alota told Rappler in the homestretch of their preparations. “It’s really time for us to really have an edge over other universities.”
A culmination of months of effort
Just how serious the Tamaraws are coming into Sunday’s competition? They have been training for it in the last 5 months.
“Talagang nag-training kami ng hard simula nung summer pa lang,” the squad’s team captain Annie Perez said.
The 5th year mat veteran also admitted that challenges were aplenty for the FEU side as the competition draws nearer.
“Sobrang dami naming problema na pinagdaanan simula pa lang nung summer na nag-start kami magtraining for this season. Syempre hindi mawawala ‘yung mga injuries, ‘yung mga conflicts.”
Rookie-laden team
The FEU Cheering Squad will be entering the Season 76 wars with a lot of new faces. This year, however, is no different from previous seasons.
“Every year it’s normal to me that I have a really big number of rookies. This time, I have 13 rookies and they’re doing good,” Alolor-Alota said.
To avoid jitters on competition day, the team practices 5 hours a day, every day.
‘We are family’
For a team that has lost a sizeable chunk to graduation last year, chemistry could be a big issue coming into the tough UAAP cheerdance ompetition. But for FEU, it’s a different case altogether.
“Ang lamang namin sa ibang school, mas united kami. Family kasi kami dito, talagang magkakapatid ang turing namin sa isa’t isa,” Perez added. “Bawat isa sa amin, talagang matapang. Hinding-hindi kami susuko.”
Wilder, Fiercer
“Kung last year, wild and fierce. Ngayon, wilder and fiercer,” the team captain hinted on what their performance on Sunday would be. “Talagang doble, todo-todo na ‘to.”
Their coach, meanwhile, owned up to being pressured after their runner-up finish last year but declares that that is where she thrives most.
“I’ve been handling the group for 12 years, I love pressure and it’s my job,” Alolor-Alota quipped.
Despite all the setbacks they have gone through in the past years, the Tamaraws are, more than ever, confident of their chances this season.
“Sobrang confident kami kasi alam namin na kaya namin at tatalunin namin sila,” Perez said. “We are claiming that we will win this time.”
With only finishing touches lacking in their routine, the only thing left to do for FEU is to make sure that when the winners are announced on weekend, a new UAAP Cheerdance champion will be crowned.
