Substitute Gelo Diamante saved the day for La Salle with a late goal while FEU needed extra time to get past UP

MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University booked their return to the UAAP football tournament finale after slipping past Ateneo De Manila University, 1-0 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium (RMFS) on Sunday, March 1.

The rival squads engaged in a feisty exchange of blows immediately after the opening whistle, with a series of attacks coming from either side.

A goal-less drought prevailed for the greater part of the match-up as both teams denied the shots of their opponents.

La Salle, however, proved to be the hungrier platoon as substitute Gelo Diamante, who came in the 76th minute, struck a late game screamer to rule Ateneo out of the title race.

FEU beats UP in extra time

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University outclassed the University of the Philippines football team, 1-0, to acquire the last ticket to the collegiate football tilt’s finale.

The Tamaraws pounded UP’s defense with consecutive blitzes on the opening half led by skipper Eric Giganto but none pierced through.

On the other end, the Maroon booters relied on counter-attacks to spark their offensive outbursts.

Regulation ended with the opposing clubs locked in a 0-0 tie which then sent the match into extra time.

The first half of added time went in favor of FEU after a hand ball inside the box which prompted the only penalty shot of the night.

UP shot stopper Ace Villanueva managed to swat away the first shot of FEU’s Arnel Amita but the latter got the ball back and tapped it to the back of the net to take the 1-0 lead for the Morayta-based kickers.

The Anto Gonzales-men strived to notch an equalizer before the final whistle but the chances were well defended by their foes.

The finals meeting between DLSU and FEU will be held at the RMFS on March 8.
