Alyssa Valdez to be Philippine flag bearer in SEA Games
The Ateneo Lady Eagles star will be the flag bearer for the Philippines at the Southeast Asian Games

MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo Lady Eagles superstar Alyssa Valdez will be the flag bearer of the Philippines for the 2015 Southeast Asian Games to be held in Singapore, it was announced on Wednesday, April 15.

After weeks of speculation, the Philippine Olympic Committee executive council unanimously selected Valdez to carry the Philippine flag, citing her charisma, humility, and willingness to serve the country as reasons for her appointment.

The Philippines will field a volleyball team in the SEA Games for the first time after nine years. The women’s team will be grouped in Group B with Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, while the Philippine men’s team will be grouped in Group A with Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar.

Valdez will be the second Filipino athlete to carry the country’s flag in a major sport competition after eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao did the same for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Valdez just recently led the Lady Eagles to back-to-back UAAP women’s volleyball titles. In May, she will also lead the Philippine team in the Asian Under-23 tourney to be held in the country.

The Southeast Asian Games will take place from June 5-16.
