Perkins delivers as La Salle punches in first win at NU’s expense
It took 3 games but the defending champion De La Salle Green Archers hung on tight and registered their first victory of the season

MANILA, Philippines – It took 3 games but the defending champion De La Salle Green Archers hung on tight and banked on Jason Perkins to claim their first win in 3 outings over the gritty NU Bulldogs, 57-55, in the men’s basketball tournament of UAAP Season 77 on Wednesday, July 23 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Archers finally got over the hump and got their first win out of the way as they slowly but surely found their rhythm in this game as one of the teams with most formidable frontline in the league.

After Norbert Torres tied the count at 49 on a split from the line and later scored a bucket to put the Archers up, 51-49, with 2:08 remaining, Perkins took over for La Salle down the stretch and came through on two freebies to make it a 53-49 advantage.

However, NU would not so easily give up the opportunity to go 3-0 as Troy Rosario made good on a putback, 53-51, with 59.4 ticks left.

But Perkins made a real hero of himself after that, cleaning up Jeron Teng’s miss for a 55-51 spread and later delivering the dagger from underneath, 57-53, with 6.7 seconds on the clock.

Perkins finished finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds while Torres added 13 markers and 8 boards.

La Salle started the game on a high note with a 6-0 run but the Bulldogs came back firing and outscored NU 16-6 to end the first up 16-12.

In the second frame, however, coach Juno Sauler got some scoring going from Perkins and Van Opstal to go on a 9-1 spurt and eventually take a 35-29 halftime advantage. – Rappler.com
