La Salle Greenhills big man John Gob commits to Green Archers
The 6-foot-5 1/2 standout will fill the void left by the graduation of DLSU big men Yutien Andrada and Norbert Torres

MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University Green Archers added another viable piece for their future by securing a commitment from La Salle Greenhills product John Gob, Rappler learned on Monday, March 9.

Gob, who’s was listed at 6-foot-5 and a half by the NBTC (National Basketball Training Center), averaged 14.9 points and 15.1 rebounds per game for LSGH in the most recent junior’s NCAA basketball tournament, where the Greenies finished with an 11-7 record and barely missed out on a Final Four seed.

Gob was named the Most Improved Player of the Year for the NCAA junior’s division in Season 90, and was one of the five to be named to the league’s Mythical Team.

Sobra po, kasi pinagtrabuhan ko po talaga,” Gob told Rappler about how excited he is to join De La Salle.

(I’m very excited, because I really worked hard for this.)

Gob’s addition will be critical for the Green Archers, who lost big men Yutien Andrada and Norbert Torres to graduation after UAAP Season 77, and may not have the services of prized recruit Ben Mbala due to an off-court controversy.

The 17-year-old, who will major in Business Management, said that “since I was in kindergarten, La Salle na ako,” referring to his long tenure being enrolled in a La Salle insitution. “Kaya every time titingin ako, syempre, La Salle chini-cheer ko.”

(That’s why every time I would watch, of course, I’d be cheering for La Salle.)

“I chose DLSU because I’m a proud Lasallian,” he also said. “I know what it’s like to fight for the green and white. La Salle has taught me everything. I know… It’s home.”

When asked what he plans to achieve while in Taft, his responded: “It’s simple: win.”

Gob was recruited by a number of other NCAA and UAAP schools, particularly San Beda College, Ateneo, and University of Sto. Tomas. After spending nearly his entire high school career playing center, he will also be fielded at the power forward position by DLSU head coach Juno Sauler.

Because of this, Gob says he plans to work on his agility.

Kailangan ko mag work sa agility para makasabay. Dati, pure five ako. Ngayon, four-five na,” he said to Rappler.

(I need to work on my agility so that I can keep up with my opponents. Before, I’d just play at the five position. Now, I’ll be playing the four and five.)

This past offseason, La Salle officially announced the commitments they attained from other coveted recruits like San Beda’s Andrei Caracut and Hope Christian High School’s Jollo Go. The team has also reportedly acquired the commitment of San Sebastian high school standout Lorenzo Navarro
