La Salle-San Beda rematch highlights FilOil opening
A rematch between the two teams involved in last year’s FilOil Flying V Premier Cup finals will highlight the opening day of this year’s preseason tournament

MANILA, Philippines – A rematch between the two teams involved in last year’s FilOil Flying V Premier Cup finals will highlight the opening day of this year’s preseason tournament on April 25, Saturday, at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

The De La Salle Green Archers and San Beda Red Lions, who are two of the nine squads in Group B of the tournament, will take on each other at 4:00 pm following the 2:00 pm contest between the UST Growling Tigers and UE Red Warriors.

In last year’s FilOil finals, La Salle beat San Beda, 71-66, thanks to the combined 32 points of Almond Vosotros and Jeron Teng and a fourth quarter comeback that saw the Green Archers outscore the Red Lions 23-10 during the 12-minute stretch.

DLSU’s line-up in this year’s FilOil tourney is expected to include their rookie recruits – Mark Dyke, Jollo Go, Andrei Caracut, John Gob, and Lorenzo Navarro – along with returnees Teng, Thomas Torres, Jason Perkins, and Julian Sargent, among others.

San Beda, who won last year’s NCAA men’s basketball competition, will return with Baser Amer and Ola Adeogun still leading the squad.

UST makes its return to the preseason tournament after skipping out last season. They will take on a new-look UE team that will be without Roi Sumang, Charles Mammie, and Moustapha Arafat.

This year’s FilOil tournament will kick off at 12:15 pm with the juniors’ match between the Ateneo Blue Eaglets and the San Beda Red Cubs, who both won the juniors’ basketball tournaments for the UAAP and NCAA last season, respectively. The last contest of opening day will commence at 6:00 pm when the JRU Heavy Bombers and FEU Tamaraws go head to head.

Out of the eight participating schools in the UAAP, seven will be part of this year’s FilOil preseason tournament with Ateneo as the only one not competing. From the NCAA, Arellano and San Sebastian are the only teams that have decided to not participate.

Reigning UAAP men’s basketball champions NU Bulldogs will lead Group A of the tournament’s eliminations along with the Adamson Soaring Falcons, FEU, JRU, UPHSD Altas, Letran Knights, CSB Blazers, EAC Generals, and Cebu-based USJR Jaguards.

Group B, on the other hand, will comprise of San Beda, DLSU, the Mapua Cardinals, Lyceum Pirates, UE, UP Fighting Maroons, UST, NAASCU-based CEU Scorpions, and SWU Cobras, who’s also from Cebu.

Each team will face their group mates in a single-round robin eliminations. The four from each group with the best records will then advance to the playoffs of the tournament. The finals will take place on June 14, Sunday.

When Rappler last spoke to tournament director Joey Guillermo, he said the league will have no television coverage from the eliminations up to the finals. In recent seasons, ABS-CBN Sports+Action televised a select number of matches.

The 2015 FilOil tournament will take a more formal approach, as players of each team will now be required to wear their “official team jerseys/uniform.” The league will also utilize FIBA rules for their games.

In the junior’s division, 10 schools will participate: Ateneo, De La Salle Zobel, San Beda, JRU, and Letran in Group A; Adamson, FEU-Diliman, La Salle Greenhills, Mapua-Malayan, and NU in Group B.
