Teng hits game-winner as DLSU advances to FilOil quarters
Jeron Teng continued his torment of University of Sto. Tomas by hitting a game-winning layup to advance to the FilOil quarterfinals

MANILA, Philippines – Jeron Teng continued his torment of University of Sto. Tomas by hitting a game-winning layup to lead the DLSU Green Archers past their UAAP rivals, 84-82, on Saturday, June 6, at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Teng, who was the 2013 UAAP Finals MVP when the Green Archers defeated the Growling Tigers in an epic 3-game championship series, finished with 12 points as DLSU ended their FilOil preseason tournament eliminations campaign at 6-2 and booked a ticket to the league quarterfinals.

Thomas Torres hit key 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the final quarter to finish with 26 for the game along with 9 rebounds. La Salle rookie Andrei Caracut put up 17 points while Jason Perkins finished with 14 markers.

La Salle, who surrendered an 11-point lead with 3:15 left in the game, will take on the UPHSD Atlas on Wednesday for a chance to make it to the semis.

UST was led by Ed Daquioag’s 20 points and the 13 markers of Kent Lao. The Growling Tigers did not have the services of Renzo Subido and Karim Abdul, who are both sitting out the FilOil tourney for rest, and Kevin Ferrer, who’s in Singapore with the Philippine SEA Games basketball team.

After the Growling Tigers cut La Salle’s 11-point edge to two in less than two minutes, a triple by Torres established some breathing room for the Green Archers. But his shot was quickly countered by a 3-pointer from Mario Bonelon.

After Torres was fouled and split his free throws, Daquioag attacked the rim and drew a foul of his own, leading to two points. On the next play, Perkins was fouled and made both charities, but Daquioag hit a triple from the left corner on the next possession to tie the contest.

With no time-outs left, La Salle inbounded the ball and handed it to Teng, who went coast-to-coast and converted a tough lefty lay-in to seal the victory.

La Salle, who played only 8 players, also attained 9 points from Abu Tratter and 4 from rookie John Gob. The Green Archers missed the services of the injured Arnold Van Opstal, Josh Torralba, and Julian Sargent. Incoming sophomore Prince Rivero was unavailable as he’s also in Singapore for the SEA Games.

In the first game of the day, the UPHSD Altas took down the NU Bulldogs, 86-76, to finish with a 7-1 record in Group A. NU, who finished 4-4, was eliminated from quarterfinal contention.

In the second game of the day, the CEU Scorpions defeated the SWU Cobras, 85-76, to improve to 7-1 and finish with the top spot in Group B. Their groupmate, the San Beda Red Lions, survived a late scare from the UE Red Warriors in the following game and came away with an 80-77 victory.

Here’s the list of quarterfinal matchups for the FilOil preseason tournament on Wednesday, June 10:
