MANILA, Philippines – The FEU Lady Tamaraws opened their UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball campaign with a victory on Sunday, November 23, at The Arena in San Juan City.
FEU made quick work of the UP Lady Maroons, sweeping in 3 sets, 25-14, 26-24, 25-20, behind 15 points from second-year star Bernadette Pons and a combined 18 markers from Remy Palma and Geneveve Casugod.
The match lasted only a little under an hour and a half, with FEU coming out of the gates on fire and winning the first set by 11, 25-14.
In the second set, the Lady Tamaraws rallied from a 21-19 deficit by going on a 5-1 run to get within one conversion away from a two sets to none lead.
The Lady Maroons, however, managed to tie the game thanks to an FEU error and block by Chester Ong, 24-24. But in the subsequent possessions, a conversion by Pons and an error by Ong awarded Far Eastern University the second set and momentum of the game.
After UP tied the third set at 7-7, FEU went on a 7-1 run to create enough of a leeway that enabled them to cruise to victory.
Nicole Tiamzon led UP with 12 points, while Ong put up 7.
