MANILA, Philippines (2ND UPDATE) – It’s final. “Superman” is flying to Houston.

The Los Angeles Lakers have issued a statement that General Manager Mitch Kupchak has been informed of Dwight Howard’s decision to not return to the Lakers.

ESPN’s Sports Center earlier tweeted that their sources said Dwight Howard has apparently changed his mind about going to Houston.

Dwight Howard, the biggest star in this year’s NBA free agent class, has decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers in favor of the Houston Rockets.

There were earlier reports that Howard will announce his decision on Twitter and he did just that first by changing his display photo to him wearing a Rockets uniform and then issueing a quick statement.

I’ve decided to become a member of the Houston Rockets. I feel it’s the best place for me and I am excited about joining the Rockets and I’m looking forward to a great season. I want to thank the fans in Los Angeles and wish them the best.”

Sam Amick of USA Today first reported the deal.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the 3-time Defensive Player of the Year is working out the final details to sign with the Rockets.

Howard may sign a four-year $88 million maximum contract if he opts to go directly to Houston but can get up to a 5-year $115 million deal if the Lakers agree to a sign-and-trade with the Rockets.

The 6’11” Howard will be teaming up with All-Star James Harden for what potentially is a deadly inside-outside combo.

It also means Howard will be in the Philippines this October for the preseason game between the Rockets and the Indiana Pacers in the Mall of Asia Arena.
