Horizon: Zero Dawn, a new post-apocalyptic game to be excited for
We’ve never seen a world like the one in Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon: Zero Dawn was one of the biggest games at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

The Playstation 4 exclusive’s gameplay trailer turned a lot of heads and had guests at their booth desperate to try out the game for themselves.

I can’t blame them. After seeing and trying out the game myself, I couldn’t wait for the entire thing to be released.

The most notable thing about Horizon is how its setting is completely different from many of the games we’ve seen before. This action role-playing game (RPG) offers an interesting take on the post-apocalyptic world with the game setting place centuries from now. In the world of Horizon, there are animal-like machines that roam in their own eco-space, and humans have learned to coexist with these machines peacefully. Humans seem to be split up in different tribes that have cultures resembling the indigenous tribes of today. It’s this contrast of future and past themes, as well as this slight reversal of roles when it comes to treating animals that make this game worth following.

The team from Guerrilla Games were inspired with the question of what could happen to Earth if humans were able to create amazing advanced technology before the event that lead to the post-apocalypse.

In fact, they revealed the story of the game itself is similar. Aloy, the female lead of the game, sets out on a journey to discover and learn more about the world she lives in, and how things came to be in the world she’s in now.

Another intriguing about the game is that the machines have managed to collaborate with each other in their ecosystem. I expect that the odd collaboration will be explained somewhere in the story but it does add another unique aspect in the gameplay.

In the gameplay trailer, we see a breed of machines called Broadheads that look like carabaos wandering around as a group. They are being guarded by what are called Watchers, machines that look like velociraptors who will attack you should you attempt to harm the other machines.

To keep them from turning hostile, Aloy has learned of a way to tame these machines via overriding their system. After overriding Aloy is able to command them or even ride on top of them.

Living among these machines are corrupted machines that turn hostile without the need for provocation. To combat these Aloy is given an array of tools and weapons to identify their weakness and take them down.

Upon playing the game it was a little tricky at first to get the controls and aiming right. Because of the array of tools that Aloy has, it can be a little difficult to choose the most suitable weapon for a fight and when to pull out a certain tool to aid her.

Luckily time slows down a bit when you go to the weapon and tools wheel and select your weapon of choosing. Time also slows down when you need to focus.

If you’ve also gotten a chance to watch the gameplay trailer shown at the press conference then you must have noticed that you will be given options for some of the dialogues in your game.

The producers clarified that the dialogue choices do not have much of a heavy impact to a the scenarios and stories in the game. However, your choice of words can affect how people see you in the game as well as the things you will learn.

All in all, I’m excited to see this game released soon. It’s an impressive looking game with a unique and refreshing perspective and it would be interesting to see how this will all turn out.
