Nvidia delves into self-driving cars with the Drive PX2
According to Nvidia, the Drive PX 2 supports processing power equivalent to 150 Macbook Pros

MANILA, Philippines – Computer graphics card maker Nvidia is branching out to self-driving cars, introducing “the world’s most powerful engine for in-vehicle artificial intelligence (AI)” at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 4 (January 5, Manila time).

According to Nvidia, the aptly-named Drive PX 2 supports processing power equivalent to 150 Macbook Pros.

The Drive PX 2 sports two next-generation Tegra processors plus two next-generation discrete GPUs, based on the Pascal architecture. These deliver “up to 24 trillion deep learning operations per second, which are specialized instructions that accelerate the math used in deep learning network inference.”

This power allows the device to process the inputs of 12 video cameras, plus lidar, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.

TechCrunch added the Drive PX 2 needs 250W of power. Nvidia is also using a liquid-cooling system with the supercomputer, and the company asserted that car manufacturers can plug the Drive PX 2 into their cars’ existing cooling systems.

Aside from the hardware of the Drive PX2, Nvidia Driveworks – a set of software tools, libraries, and modules – will speed up the development and testing the souped-up autonomous cars.

Nvidia said it will partner with as many carmakers as it can, first with Volvo. The Drive PX 2 will be in 100 upcoming test cars as a result. Nvidia also teamed up with Audi, BMW, Daimler, and Ford for further Drive PX 2 testing. Rappler.com
