Mattel’s ThingMaker lets you 3D print your own toys
The ThingMaker, a brand name from the 1960s, is revived with the latest technology

MANILA, Philippines – Toy maker Mattel is staking out its claim in the tech side of the toy industry by reaching out to the enterprising side of kids’ creativity.

At the 2016 New York Toy Fair last February 12, it showed off the ThingMaker, its very own kid-friendly 3D printer and application for designing and creating action figures, wearables, and toy jewelry.

The ThingMaker, a brand name from the 1960s, was brought back to life with the benefits of 21st century technology for this new push.

According to Fortune, the company teamed up with AutoDesk to make an iOS and Android app that kids can use to design their own toys.

The app also works with existing 3D printers, allowing families with parents who use 3D printers to take advantage of the app without necessarily shelling out for new hardware.

The app itself uses base blueprints to build specific types of creations. At the same time, it also lets kids know the time it will take to print a new toy, usually in terms of hours needed to complete the build.

The ThingMaker 3D Printer will be available fall 2016 in the US, at an expected $299.99 price point. – Rappler.com
