Samsung may release bendable smartphones in 2017 – report

While one model is said to fold in half, the other supposedly has a 5-inch unfurling display that becomes an 8-inch panel

MANILA, Philippines – Samsung Electronics might be releasing smartphones with bendable screens in 2017.

A Bloomberg report on Tuesday, June 7, said the company is considering coming out with phones that feature bendable OLED screens next year.

People familiar with the matter said the initiative is called “Project Valley.” While one model is said to fold in half, the other supposedly has a 5-inch unfurling display that becomes an 8-inch panel.

One of Samsung’s main claims to fame in the smartphone wars is its selling of smartphones that feature multiple usable sides – the Edge line of smartphones.

One of the people Bloomberg spoke with added that the bendable-screen smartphones would not be marketed under the Galaxy S name.

If the report is proven to be true, the phones could be announced as early as February, when the Mobile World Congress comes round again.

Samsung is also said to be skipping a number in its Note lineup, with the next Note device being called the Note 7 to bring the numbering into line with the Galaxy S smartphones.

Samsung, however, declined to comment. – Rappler.com
