Facebook debuts 360-degree photos
Facebook's 360-degree photos can easily be taken by a 360 photo app or a 360-degree camera

MANILA, Philippines – Facebook will now allow users to share 360-degree photos on their timelines, the company announced Thursday, June 9 (June 10 in Manila).

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off the new feature on his page, saying the 360-degree photos system works similarly to 360-degree videos.

“You can tilt your phone and feel like you’re actually there. You can also check them out in virtual reality for a fully immersive experience,” Zuckerberg said.

Facebook’s 360-degree Photos are also a bit more manageable than 360 video as Facebook’s official announcement points out.

“Simply take a panorama with your phone or capture a 360-degree photo using a 360 photo app or 360 camera, and then post it on Facebook as you would a normal photo. From there, we’ll convert it to an immersive 360 photo that people can explore, similar to how people experience 360 videos on Facebook,” it said.

The 360 Photos are identifiable by the compass icon to the right of the photo. On mobile, users can tap and drag the photo or move the phone to look around. Clicking and dragging the 360photo, meanwhile, will do the same thing on the web. – Rappler.com
