WATCH: YouTube’s mega-compilation of top videos for 2016
How many can you identify in this year's YouTube Rewind video?

MANILA, Philippines – Online video site YouTube has a yearly tradition of collecting the year’s best videos in one epic compilation. It’s called “YouTube Rewind,” a tradition which started back in 2010 to pay tribute to the people, music videos, viral videos, trends, and challenges that defined the year that was.

This year’s mega-compilation video was published on the YouTube Spotlight channel on Wednesday, December 7, US time. So far, the video has gotten over 16 million views.

The fun, colorful video features snippets and appearances from the likes of “Carpool Karaoke” genius James Corden, the object-crushing Hydraulic Press Channel, Pikotaro of “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” fame, and YouTube star Casey Neistat who snowboarded in New York City at the start of the year.

Memes such as the “Running Man Challenge,” the time-stopping “Mannequin Challenge,” water bottle flipping, and the “Dab” – a dance move that has people flinging their arm backward while burying their face into their other arm – were also given screen time.

In music, the iconic David Bowie as well as pop artists Ariana Grande (and her black bunny costume), Sia, and Justin Bieber are among those who made the cut.

YouTube identified 40 trends all in all, packing them into a nearly 7-minute video.

To make things more fun, YouTube also prepared a quiz where you can test your knowledge of the year’s best videos. Think you’re a YouTube expert? Take the test here.

If you feel like you’re not up for that quiz yet, YouTube also created a version of YouTube Rewind that features an integrated interactive guide. The guide appears on the bottom of the video, identifying the references as the clip rolls. Users may click on items appearing on the guide to pull up extra information.

Top videos for 2016

In an email sent to Rappler, YouTube also shared its list of the year’s top videos, topped by the “Carpool Karaoke” episode featuring singer Adele. YouTube said these videos have 550 million views globally and were watched for over 25 million hours. Check them out:

  1. Adele Carpool Karaoke

  2. Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen/PIKO-TARO

  3. What’s inside a Rattlesnake Rattle?

The 550 million views, however, were dwarfed by the views gotten by this year’s most watched music videos. The top 2 videos, Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home” and Calvin Harris’ “This Is What You Came For,” both broke the one-billion view mark. The lowest-ranked item in the list (Twenty One Pilots’ “Heathens”) alone has 480 million views.
