Meet the Nokia X Android smartphone

MANILA, Philippines – Nokia finally took the wraps off its much anticipated Android phone, the Nokia X at a simple launch event at the 2014 Mobile World Conference in Barcelona.

The Nokia X runs a custom version of Android that takes design cues from Nokia’s Lumia line of Windows smartphones. At the center of the new UI is a swipe-based notifications and multitasker called Fastlane that allows fast access to the people, apps and information that are most important to you.

Nokia is positioning the Nokia X as a mid-range smartphone in the middle of its low-end Asha and high-end Lumia line. 

The Nokia X comes in 3 variants, the Nokia X, X+ and XL priced at €89 (P5460), €99 (P6074), and €109 (P6688) respectively. The X+ is identical to the entry-level 4-inch X model but comes with more memory and storage space. The Nokia XL comes with a larger 5-inch screen and 5MP and 2MP rear and front facing cameras respectively. 

The Nokia X is available immediately while the X+ and XL will be available in the 2Q 2014. 

Interestingly users won’t be able to download apps straight from the Google Play store. Users will need specialized apps developed for the Nokia X Software platform. Nokia says you can get apps from the Nokia Store, 3rd party app stores or via a technique called side-loading.

Facebook, Twitter, Vine, LINE, Skype, Viber, WeChat, Plants vs. Zombies 2, Fruit Ninja, and Bejeweled 2, are all preloaded on the device.
