Nokia's budget Android smartphone goes on sale in the Philippines for P5,990

MANILA, Philippines — The Nokia X is now available in the Philippines.

Announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, the Nokia X is the first Android smartphone by the Finnish smartphone manufacturer and the company’s attempt at reaching out to emerging markets like the Philippines.

The 4-inch dual-sim smartphone comes with a very low-key spec sheet including a 1 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, a 3MP camera, 4GB of storage and a 1500 mAh battery.

Unlike the usual Android smartphone however it will not allow users to download apps directly from the Google Play store. Users will need specialized apps developed for the Nokia X Software platform. Facebook, Twitter, Vine, LINE, Skype, Viber, WeChat, Plants vs. Zombies 2, Fruit Ninja, and Bejeweled 2, are all preloaded on the device.

Like Nokia’s high-end line of Lumia phones the Nokia X features a tile-based user interface. It also carries over a feature from its Asha feature phone line called Fastlane. Accessible via a quick swipe from the home screen – a mashup between iOS’s Command Center and Android’s Notification drop-down.

The phone is available in the greater Manila area and key provinces starting Wednesday, March 12 and retails for P5,990 (about $136) in bright green, bright red, black and white. – Rappler.com
