Facebook and Instagram down, users complain on Twitter
(3RD UPDATE) Facebook says a change affecting its configuration systems was the cause of the downtime

MANILA, Philippines (3RD UPDATE) – Facebook allayed fears of a hack against their service on Tuesday, January 27, following an hour’s worth of downtime and a statement by a hacking group claiming responsibility for taking down Facebook, Instagram, and 3 other websites.

Speaking to The Next Web, a Facebook spokesperson said, “Earlier this evening many people had trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. This was not the result of a third party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems. We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100% for everyone.”

Users around the world earlier reported difficulties accessing Facebook and Instagram’s web and mobile services.

The downtime, which appeared to have begun around 2:25 pm Manila time, did not appear to affect Facebook-owned mobile messaging service Whatsapp.

Facebook appeared to have gotten back to normal around 3:10 pm, Manila time.

On Twitter, hacking group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for the takedown of Facebook, Instagram, and three other services: Tinder, AIM, and Hipchat.

People were in relatively good spirits despite the downtime, taking some time to quip online about it.

The Next Web adds that the last instance of significant Facebook downtime was back in September 2014, going down twice that month. – Rappler.com
