Twitter, Vine expand into 140-second videos
Twitter users can now tweet 140-second videos, up from a 30-second limit. Vine users can use a 6-second Vine clip as a sort of teaser to a 140-second video on Vine.

MANILA, Philippines – Social media giant Twitter and short video-sharing service Vine are expanding their video offerings in different ways, but they have something in common: a new 140-second limit.

Twitter announced on Tuesday, June 21, that users can now tweet 140-second videos, up from a 30-second limit. Meanwhile, Vine users can use a 6-second Vine clip as a sort of teaser to a 140-second video on Vine.

In addition to the expanded video lengths, Twitter is working on “a new, full-screen viewing experience, where more great video and Vine Tweets will be suggested below.” The feature will be rolling out soon for Twitter on iOS and Android devices.

Vine’s 140-second limit is a little bit different. Vines with a 140-second video alongside it will have a “watch more” button in the lower right corner. Users can then tap or click the button to view the attached video.

As Vine’s announcement explains it, “You’ll continue to see Vines, those short looping trailers we all know and love. It’s just that now some Vines might have a longer video too.”

Aside from the 140-second limit, Twitter and Vine both said select publishers will still be able to post up to 10 minutes of video using the company’s professional publishing tools.

Twitter struggling

Twitter has been struggling to boost its user base, which has been stuck at around 300 million over the past few quarters, unable to expand past a core that includes politicians, celebrities, and journalists.

Analysts say Twitter’s format limiting tweets to 140 characters makes it harder to win mass appeal, and it has been overtaken by more visual services such as Facebook-owned Instagram, which announced Tuesday it now has 500 million users.

“Video is becoming increasingly central to the real-time conversations happening on Twitter – video Tweets on Twitter have increased by over 50% since the beginning of 2016,” Twitter’s product development chief Jeremy Rishel said.

“And we love watching all the timely, important, and funny video content people share every day.”

Twitter announced Monday, June 20, it was acquiring British-based artificial intelligence startup Magic Pony to bolster its capacity for analysis of visual content.
