President Benigno Aquino III urged Filipinos to be wise voters in the 2013 midterm polls. “2013 is a critical chapter in our crusade for long-term development and clean governance,” he said in his New Year message. Aquino said sustaining his reforms depends on who will be elected. Aquino’s ruling Liberal Party seeks to get a majority of seats in Congress and local positions. It will be up against the opposition United Nationalist Alliance, and other parties and independent candidates. The polls are seen as a referendum of Aquino’s leadership.
