The revenge of the nerds

MANILA, Philippines – In the Information Age, the nerd reigns supreme.

Gone are the days when kids were too cool for school. Slackers and jocks are no longer the big men on campus; it’s now the A-student.

The class of 2015 has its share of brilliant students who made headlines because of near-perfect grade averages and getting a higher degree way ahead of their peers.

There’s Tiffany Uy of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, who graduated with a biology degree as summa cum laude. Uy made headlines in recent days for getting a 1.004 – the first to achieve the highest grade point average since pre-war years.

Uy’s good friend Carmela Lao also achieved a near-perfect average – graduating from the Massachussetts Institute of Technology with a 4.9 out of 5.0.

And at 18, Jozef Erece is one of the youngest law graduates in the world, having just graduated from the University of Southern Queensland in Australia.
