Carrie the musical comes to the Philippine stage

MANILA, Philippines – The story of a misfit bullied in school comes alive on stage in the musical adaptation of ‘Carrie.’

I’m here to talk to the cast of Carrie, a musical stage adaptation of the 1976 cult film directed by Brian De Palma. Atlantis Productions brings us this musical about about a misfit being bullied by the popular kids in school, based on Stephen King’s bestseller!

Carrie director Bobby Garcia says he assembled a powerhouse cast.
Garcia can’t wait for audiences to see Mikkie Bradshaw’s breakout performance.
Bradshaw says Carrie is a very demanding role and brings her to a very dark place.

I’m not at all a Carrie, so it’s difficult to brings to life that role because it goes against every instinct, you know I have. If people push me, I’ll push them back, but that’s not what she’ll do so its definitely a lot of building the character ground up.

Shiela Valderrama-Martinez plays Miss Gardner, Carrie’s confidante.
She is thrilled by rare opportunity this production offers.

Its also exciting cause the writers of Carrie are coming next week to watch tech. So we are very blessed that have that as well. It’s very rare to have that active relationship with the actual writers of the show that you’re doing.

Award-winning musical theater royalty, Menchu Lauchenco-Yulo plays Carrie’s mother, Margaret White, a religious fanatic.
She says there is nothing about the role she relates to and she had to do extensive research.
She says the audience will be able to take a piece of the musical home.

We’ve recorded four songs from the musical and so at least people get to take away, you and take home some of the recordings. But I’m very very excited and nervous. I think everyone is nervous and excited about it.

Actor Markki Stroem plays star football player and valedictorian, Tommy Ross.
He confesses to being bullied as a teenager.
He says this kind of musical theater production strikes a chord with everyone who’s been through high school.
