MANILA, Philippines – The Senate held a public hearing on bills proposing the modernization of the Philippine National Police (PNP), as well as resolutions probing the “increase” in criminality in the country.

The hearing tackled key reforms in the 150,000-strong police force.

After remaining silent in the face of allegations of corruption and ineptitude, PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima  testified before the Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs. During the committee’s last hearing, Senator Grace Poe, head of the committee, reprimanded Purisima for his absence.

Poe has also called on the country’s top cop to take a leave because of at least 3 plunder raps charged against him over alleged shady deals within the PNP, under-declared wealth, and the construction of the PNP chief’s “White House” inside Camp.

Before the corruption complaints, the PNP was in hot water over a series of high-profile crimes involvong PNP personnel. (READ: Cops involved in viral EDSA incident)

The Department of the Interior and Local Government announced plans of launching a lifestyle check on PNP personnel, starting from “star-rank” officers or the PNP’s generals.
