Rappler will speak with Mujiv Hataman, governor-elect of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines – On May 17, the ARMM Regional Board of Canvassers proclaimed Hataman governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Garnering a total of 446,227 votes, Hataman beats his closest rival Pax Mangudadatu by over 200,000 votes in the region’s first synchronized elections with the rest of the country.

Previously, Hataman served as the ARMM’s offcer-in-charge. President Benigno Aquino III, who appointed Hataman OIC, pushed for his candidacy in the 2013 elections.

Before being appointed as ARMM OIC governor, Hataman served 3 terms as representative of the Anak Mindanao party list. It was during his stint in Congress that he became friends with then Tarlac Representative Aquino.

Hataman is one of the youngest to hold the position. He is also the first to hail from the Basilan region. He is a member of the Yakan tribe, a major indigenous group in Mindanao.
