DELHI BRAVEHEART. Google lights a virtual candle to remember the 23-year-old gang-rape victim. The caption on the candle reads, "In memory of the Delhi braveheart."
MANILA, Philippines - On the Internet, it can be difficult to show feelings of grief regarding senstitive topics, much less offer support to those grieving. Despite this, simple things stand out amidst the darkness.
Google has joined India in honoring the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim whom most now call the Delhi braveheart after her death on December 29. The Indian version of the Google homepage now has a candle below the search bar, a silent offering of virtual light to remember her by.
Most of India was grieving or protesting during the weekend, holding peaceful demonstrations to show, as Rupam Jain Nair of Agence France-Presse put it, "a tipping point for how the nation deals with violence against women."
As 2012 makes its way into the new year, the people of India hope that 2013 will provide better protection for women who want to feel safe. As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh mentioned in an earlier report, the problem "occurs in all states and regions. It requires greater attention by the central government and states." - Rappler.com
