BEIJING, China – The presidents of China and Vietnam planned to discuss their nations’ dispute over the South China Sea and promote economic ties during talks on Wednesday, June 19, state media said.

Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang was scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, at the start of a 3-day visit to China.

Sang told Chinese state media in Vietnam that he expected the two sides to propose new measures for handling maritime disputes.

“The friendship between Vietnam and China is a common precious asset of the two peoples,” Sang said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said he wanted to use the visit to “enhance political mutual trust” with Vietnam.

The two sides planned to sign bilateral documents covering political, economic, trade and cultural cooperation during Sang’s visit, Hu said.
