JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Nearly 130 people were injured but no fatalities were reported when two passenger trains collided outside the South African coastal city of Durban on Thursday, June 23, medical services at the scene said.
The two trains plowed into each other in Lamontville township on the outskirts of Durban in the afternoon, causing the large number of moderate and minor injuries.
“128 people were cleared from the scene, and 80 were transported immediately to hospital,” Werner Vermaak, spokesman for the ER24 emergency service, told AFP.
None of the injured were in critical condition.
Medics said one of the trains was derailed and some of its badly-damaged carriages were under a bridge, but the cause of the crash was not known. – Rappler.com
