The latest updates on Jokowi's inauguration, Sea World Indonesia shuts down, monorail planned for Halim Airport, and more

JAKARTA, Indonesia – President-elect Joko Widodo’s gracing of the cover of TIME magazine and more details about what to expect during and after his inauguration on Monday lead our wrap of stories from Indonesia.

1. Jokowi makes the cover of TIME; TIME makes local headlines

Indonesia’s new presidents normally grace the cover of TIME magazine, but President-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s version released on Thursday, October 16, comes in the age of social media. The cover, therefore, quickly went viral, spawing Internet memes and, consequently, local headlines.

2. Long wait for Jokowi’s cabinet to end soon

After months of speculation, Jokowi says he’s ready to announce his final cabinet structure on Monday, October 20, after his presidential inauguration, and the acual names of those who will fill those seats by as early as Tuesday. Jokowi has been quiet about the selection process, with critics accusing him of not being transparent, but the vice president-elect, Jusuf Kalla, has defended him by saying they didn’t want to embarrass those who wouldn’t make the cut. So far, it looks like there will be 33 ministries – down by 1 from the current structure – but with an additional coordinating ministry for maritime, natural resources and environment. Some existing ministries will be merged, like industry and trade, while new ones such as for labor are expected to be created. Read the full story on Tempo.co.

3. More inauguration details emerge: Open palace gates, 25,000 free meals

In another sign of being the people’s president, Jokowi will reportedly open the gates of the State Palace to about 7,000 people during the official welcoming ceremony that will take place after the inauguration and the parade – the first time it’s being done. At the concert and celebration that will follow in the National Monument (Monas), hundreds of volunteers will make sure attendees don’t go hungry by giving away 25,000 nasi bungkus (packed rice meals). These will be donated by merchants, farmers, and fishermen, Kompas.com reported. (READ: Jokowi’s inauguration: What you need to know)

4. Sea World Indonesia shut down

Sea World Indonesia has been shut down for “an unspecified time”, the CEO of Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, Gatot Setyowaluyo, announced on Thursday. The sea park has in fact not been operating since September 26 following a dispute between Sea World and Ancol, where it is located, over a contract dispute, Tempo.co reported. Sea World, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in June, expected to be able to renew its 20-year contract, but Ancol wanted it to hand over its assets as originally stipulated. But none of the marine life will be harmed in the dispute, Gatot assured.

5. New monorail planned for Halim Airport

A monorail connecting Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta with the Dukuh Atas Station in Central Jakarta will soon ferry up to 180 passengers per trip. The Lion Group will reportedly fund the entire project, which is estimated to take 9 months to finish. The monorail is part of the improvements to the Halim Airport, which is expected to host more domestic flights to reduce the burden on the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.  – Rappler.com
