13-year-old boy dies after taking a selfie

JAKARTA, Indonesia – A 13-year-old junior high school student died Wednesday evening, May 4, after falling while taking a selfie with friends.

The 7th-grade boy slipped and fell from the 5th floor of a building in Koja, North Jakarta that was still under construction. 

“The kids were fooling around at the immigration building with his friends, and were taking selfies. He slipped and fell,” said Koja police chief Commissioner Supriatno on Thursday. 

The boy was accompanied by his friend Iqbal to meet their group of friends. After Iqbal went home, he was told by another friend that the boy had gotten into an accident.

They then called the police to ask for help, said Supriatno. Suprianto said there were 8 kids playing at the empty building.

The boy was immediately rushed to Koja General Hospital Koja in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta but was said to have died instantly. He was the eldest son of his parents’ two boys.

Family members said they were shocked that the boy, who loves baseball, was even playing at a construction site at night. He had asked his mother for money to buy coffee, before heading out.

The police chief said children should avoid playing in construction sites.
