The 28-year-old attempted his escape after his captors allegedly declared they would behead him

JAKARTA, Indonesia – One of the Indonesian sailors kidnapped almost 8 weeks ago, reportedly by the Abu Sayyaf group, escaped his captors on Tuesday morning, August 16.

Mohammad Safyan, 28, was among the crew of tugboat Charles kidnapped near the Philippine border on June 23. According to Sulu police, Safyan escaped his captors through a mangrove area and was assisted by locals from Baranggay Bual and Bato-Itum, both located in Luuk, Sulu.

Safyan attempted his escape after his captors allegedly declared they would behead him.

Locals spotted Safyan floating in the waters, trying to escape fishnets which entrapped him, when he was rescued.

As of publication time, the police said Safyan is en route to the Sulu police office for processing and other documentation before being turned over to his family.

Suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf abducted 7 crew members in June, while it was traversing Indonesian waters from the Philippines. Armed men, who were on a motorized boat, fired at the vessel and seized 7 of the 13 crew members. – Rappler.com
