Ministers' Day of the opening of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict 2014

MANILA, Philippines – Delegates from over 100 countries are in London for the four-day Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict.

Co-chaired by UN Special Envoy Angelina Jolie and British Foreign Secretary William Hague the four-day event brings together representatives from various sectors to discuss ways to put an end to using rape as a tool of war.

“It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict,” said the 39-year-old Jolie. “There is nothing inevitable about it. It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power. It is done to torture and humiliate innocent people and often very young children.”

The final session on Friday, June 13, is an opportunity to reflect on the discussions and events from the previous days, both in London and around the world.  Through the use of speeches, audiovisual content, live performance and highlights from the Fringe the plenary session will provide a fitting conclusion to the Summit and demonstrate the strengthened shared global commitment to taking practical actions to end the use of rape and sexual violence as weapons of war.
