Aika Rey is a business reporter for Rappler. She covered the Senate of the Philippines before fully diving into numbers and companies.
Before joining the team of reporters, she was a researcher then later managed campaigns for Rappler’s community engagement arm, MovePH. There, she found the value of data in journalism. She’s convinced data journalism is the future of journalism.
She spearheaded the #SaferRoadsPH project, which inspired road safety policies at the local level. In 2018, its microsite won the SEMRush Data Journalism Website award. Her work on road safety issues earned her a spot for a fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and the chance to contribute to the Data Journalism Handbook 2: Towards a Critical Data Practice.
Aika completed her political science degree at Ateneo de Manila University in 2015. She finished an exchange program in Lille, France, where she studied English literature and European law when she thought she would pursue law after college. (Spoiler alert: She didn’t.) In 2020, she finished a certificate course on discovering insights from data with the Ateneo Graduate School of Business-Center for Continuing Education.
When she’s not writing, you’ll find Aika experimenting with food, taking care of her plants, or binge watching shows. She’s a Taurus with a Scorpio rising sign.
