About Jet Damazo-Santos
Jet decided she wanted to become a journalist when she became the news editor ofThe Guidon, the student newspaper of the Ateneo de Manila University, where she studied under a full scholarship. After an internship at the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and graduating with Ateneo’s Raul Locsin Award for Student Journalism in 2001, she joined Newsbreak magazine. There, under the tutelage of Rappler's current senior editors, she received recognition for her work from the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility’s Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Excellence in Journalism and other award-giving bodies.
She later took a slight detour and joined the Asian Development Bank's external communications department, but was eventually drawn back to journalism – this time in Jakarta. At the Jakarta Globe, a leading English-language news company in Indonesia, she started out as a copy editor but was soon promoted to news editor, then associate editor, and later headed the web desk. In between all this, she moonlighted as a writer and photographer for various magazines and publications throughout the region, and even had a short stint as a political and security risk consultant.
A Jakarta resident since 2008, she's now a fan of Indonesia's Padang food but still misses isaw and bibingka, and tries to bring back as much bagoong and banana ketchup as she can whenever she flies from Manila to Jakarta.
