KD is a scientist by training and a journalist by profession. He was born in Quezon City but was raised in Virac, Catanduanes.

He grew up bent on pursuing a career in science. He studied at the Philippine Science High School Bicol Region Campus and later completed his degree in environmental science at the Ateneo de Manila University in 2007. He holds a minor in English literature, was part of school newspaper The Guidon, and then helped form KATIPUNAN, an award-winning, independent student-run newsmagazine based at the University.

While waiting for calls from environmental consulting companies after graduation, he took a 3-month stint as a mobile content writer for UAAP basketball games at ABS-CBN Interactive - even if he's not a basketball fan. He eventually became the community editor of ABS-CBN News Online, assigned to work with this newfangled thing called social media. He was part of the team handling the social media components of the TV Patrol and Bandila microsites, and headed the Halalan 2010 social media desk.

He is now a desk editor for Rappler, and is also reporting on science, technology, the environment, and everything in between.
